Today we remember those who gave their lives to give us freedom.  Men and women who fought against the enemy for the sake of our country.  People who battled for the concept of good over evil.  We owe them so much more than our gratitude for all that they and their families have given up for us.  Lives lost for a greater cause.  All for the love of their country.

As I was considering the selflessness of our military brothers and sisters, I was overcome with their sacrifice.  They died for people they didn’t even know.  They faced an enemy willingly no matter what the cost.  Brave is not a good enough word.  Heroic almost comes close.

And then it occurred to me that their sacrifice is a picture of Someone else who gave His life. He left His home to fight in a foreign land. His goal?  Our freedom. He knew that He would fight to the death.  He also knew that to accomplish the goal, there was no alternative.  He went to the cross and died for us to defeat our enemy.  We didn’t deserve it.  We didn’t even know Him.  But He did it any way.  The fight for good over evil.  All for the love of us.

Today as I consider the sacrifice of those who gave their lives I will pause and thank God for such amazing heros.  I will stop to remember once again, the sacrifice that Jesus Himself, the ultimate hero who saved my life and my soul, made for me. And I will try never to forget either…

1 John 2:2 – He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

John 3:16 – For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
