You gave breath to lifeless dirt
Brought beauty from the dust of earth
Took useless, ugly shifting sand
And made living, breathing man
What once lay flat upon the ground
Now stood there with Your image crowned.
The old transformed to something new
A reflection of Creator You.
But dirt would find its way back in
Soiling beauty, ugly sin
Smudged and stained with guilt and shame
Mankind hid and passed the blame.
Yet pursuing you still came
And called him out by his own name.
The dirt had damaged mankind’s soul
And in man’s heart was left a hole.
The wound it left, infected, raw
But You had a plan for what You saw.
Through the ages man would try
To wash the dirt and let it dry.
But no attempt could wash the stain
That left a gap between you and man.
And so You came to once again
Dirty Your hands to create new man.
From the depths of a womb to the filth of a stall
They just saw a baby, but You saw it all.
You walked in our sandals and dirtied Your feet
To experience earth, the bitter and sweet.
Thirty three years marked by sadness and pain
In the company of mankind, helplessly stained.
Your hands healed with mud and made the blind see
Your hands touched untouchables, making them free.
You came to undo the damage of dirt
Requiring You to experience hurt.
Until on the cross You carried it all –
The guilt and the shame, the sin and the gall.
You cried out in victory, whispered through pain
“It is finished!” Your precious blood cleansed the deep stain.
My dirt is no match for the strength of Your blood
You look at this girl and You say, “It is good!”
You’ll continue Your work ’til the day that I die
I’ll return to the ground and to You I will fly…
